Energy Disturbances

Besides the quality, the movement directions of the types of Qi are important for our health. Disturbances can result in the following disorders:

  • Direction: With a healthy stomach, the movement of Qi goes from top to bottom. If the energy flows from the bottom to the top, it can result in belching, heartburn, and vomiting. In healthy lungs, energy also descends. If it changes its direction, you get a cough. The Qi of the liver rises.
  • Here strength and speed play an important role, because if the energy doesn’t flow correctly too much energy builds up, which can lead to a bad mood and temper tantrums as an energy release.
  • Lack of Energy: If you have too little energy you feel tired, weak, and unpowered. Symptoms of low energy are low blood pressure, dizziness, cold hands and feet, irregular menstruation, headache, and increased susceptibility to infection.
  • Energy Surplus: heat sensation on the body, headache, restlessness, irritability, and arthritis.
  • Quality of Energy: Health refers not only to the body but also to emotions. If someone mourns for 20 years for their dead hamster, they have a high quantity of energy. However the quality is not right.
  • Stagnation of Energy: Sometimes Qi does not flow continuously, as if stones and sand were blocking a river. Symptoms include headache, back pain, joint pain, scar pain, cycle related discomfort, and other pain.

This list is not exhaustive however it is supposed to show the thinking process in Chinese medicine. If you look at health and illness from an energetic point of view, you can treat any disorder. In practice, this is done by controlling the Qi through the acupuncture points in the body. There are various possibilities for this.
